Letters: Intolerance and bigotry
Whether you agree with his politics or not, when Barack Obama was elected president, the United States made a statement that resonated with people around the globe. We made a statement that we look past differences in appearance and instead focus on the character of a human being.
This one act dramatically raised the perceived status of the United States and of our people. Now that goodwill is vanishing.
Through threatened destruction of religious icons, through promotion of intolerance and hatred of the Muslim faith, and through continued demonization of immigrants, we have made it abundantly clear that intolerance and outright bigotry still are much a part of American culture.
We have shown that the principle of freedom and equality that our country was founded upon means nothing. Where's your pride, America? Where's your integrity?
